Lorna Williams is currently working as an independent consultant in the Chemicals and Materials area. With a rolling contract to run the Secretariat for the British Adhesives & Sealants Association (BASA), a trade association for Adhesives and Sealants Manufacturers and associated suppliers to the industry with over 100 members. Lorna has recently also been appointed as BASA's Chief Executive Officer. Lorna is also heavily involved with aspects of UK, European and International standardisation covering product performance for various adhesives and sealants types, Emissions of construction products, and fire performance of constructions products.
In addition Lorna has a limited amount of time available to work with other clients on select projects and is able to use her understanding of the adhesives, sealants and additives market to advise clients on various projects.

For her last employment position at Eastman, Lorna’s focus role at Eastman required her to manage specific projects including the development program for new products relating to the use of plasticizers in adhesives and sealants applications. In 2014 Lorna successfully fast tracked a stage gate project worth over €13M in new plasticizer sales in less than 9 months. Lorna was responsible for extensive industry advocacy at European and International level relating to adhesives and sealants. Lorna remains active on a number of CEN and ISO committees and is the UK principal expert for both the International (ISO) and European (CEN) committees for tile adhesives and waterproofing membranes. Lorna represents BASA on the European Adhesives and Sealants Association (FEICA) European Technical Board, is Chair of the FEICA National Associations Forum and also sits on the FEICA Construction Task Working Group. Lorna is also Secretary of the Alliance of Chemical Associations (ACA) in the UK. Lorna was heavily involved in food contact applications, and was involved with Eastman as their representative on the HARRPA groups within CEFIC (FCA, IAQ and RTP). Lorna also take a leading role in sealants standardization at CEN and ISO level on behalf of the UK sealant industry.

Since 2015 when I became a self-employed consultant, I have worked on bespoke projects looking at the market for plasticisers and dispersions in a variety of different applications.
I have been active on small projects relating to training related to adhesives and sealants and polymers and plasticisers. I have carried out small business and market development projects, but my main focus is on my contract to run the British Adhesives & Sealants Association, which requires an in depth understanding of the regulatory, technical and commercial aspects relating to adhesives and sealants formulating and manufacturing, management of the administrative functions and event planning and management.

I was Market Development Manager for Plasticisers for Eastman Company UK Ltd from Aug 2012 to Mar 2015. My focus role at Eastman required me to manage specific projects including the development program for new products relating to the use of plasticizers in adhesives and sealants applications. I was also heavily involved in food contact applications, and was Eastman’s representative on the HARRPA groups within CEFIC (FCA, IAQ and RTP).
I was Business Development Manager for Plasticizers for Eastman from Jan 2009 – Aug 2012 and was responsible for the European sales of plasticizers to adhesive and sealant manufacturers.
I was Technical Manager for Construction & Adhesives for Synthomer Ltd from Apr 2007 - Jan 2009 and was responsible for the management of two technical laboratories (Harlow & Frankfurt) and a total of 11 staff. I managed applications and an R&D program relating to packaging adhesives, wood adhesives and building products, including sealants. My role required extensive travelling and building relationships with customers. I was required to understand the commercial implications of offering different products and was responsible for the development of new products and sales to the market including development of the launch plans.
From Mar 2005 – Apr 2007 I was Building Products Technical Manager for Synthomer Ltd and was responsible for the management of the Harlow labs in application areas related to formulated building adhesives and sealants. I led the R&D projects and provided support to the sales force in terms of technical information and training. This was where I became more active in sealants standardisation at CEN and ISO level.
From Sept 1997 – Mar 2005 I was Assistant Technical Manager for Packaging, Wood & Building Products at Synthomer Ltd and was responsible for a small team of chemists, providing support to the commercial team and customers and was involved in developing the business to look at the use of existing products into new markets. I continued to be heavily involved in the sealants and building adhesives working groups within BASA and also CEN and ISO.
From Apr 1990 – Sept 1997 I was Technical Service Chemist – Surface Coatings & Building Products for Harlow Chemical Companyand provided technical service support to customers in the field of acrylic admixtures for cement and gradually expanded the role to include sealants and formulated construction adhesives. During this time, I started to become more involved with BASA, starting with the building adhesives working group and then including the sealants working group. I became chair of the sealants working group and quickly started to become involved in CEN and ISO working groups
I started my career working for Smith & Nephew Research as a Research Chemist from Sept 1987 – Apr 1990 where I was a Research Chemist and project leader for a project relating to synthetic casting bandages. I ran a three-roll mill and also an injection moulding machine. I carried out lab work to quantify mechanical performance of cast bandages and I was involved in supervising clinical trials to progress other projects.
