Biruni Associates

Member Profile

Biruni Associates is a Research and Development consultancy devoted to solving technical and scientific problems of products containing surfactants, colloids and particulates. We apply science in an innovative way to solve complex formulation and stability problems. We can help consolidate the current products by rationalizing and fine-tuning formulations or help to propagate new lines and novel formulations. We can bring back-burner projects into fruition, speeding up current projects, investigate the impact of emerging technologies and give an old line a new life through new functionalities or alternative ingredients.

In the last five years we have worked for Philips Singapore (domestic steam irons), Lubrizol Asia/China (market prediction), National Starch Food Innovation USA (quality control of food polymers), Reckitt Benckiser (Hall, UK) Air fresheners (AirWick brand) perfume solubility in surfactants and solvents, and  QXE Industries Limited UK (high phase volume fire retardants, Intumescents, non-slips and antimicrobial dispersions).

Qualifications and Accreditations

  • The University of Aston in Birmingham (UK), PhD, NMR, 1986
  • The University of Birmingham (UK), MSc, Physics and Technology of Nuclear Reactors, 1981
  • The University of Tehran (Iran), MSc, Nuclear Reactors Technology, 1979, Teaching Nuclear Reactor Physics in Tehran University to Nuclear Reactor Technicians.
  • The University of Tehran (Iran), BSc, Chemistry, 1975
  • Royal Society of Chemistry Chartered Scientist, 2006
  • Royal Society of Chemistry Fellowship, 2004
  • Royal Society of Chemistry Chartered Chemist, 1990

Recent Experience and Assignments

We solved the static formation which occurred during ironing of certain fabrics with a new domestic iron designed by a multi-national electronic and electrical goods company. In spite of internal team efforts the problem had persisted hampering the launch of the new iron design. We combined chemistry and physics to devise a number of solutions within the very challenging timescale the company set us. We found new solvents for perfume solution of air fresheners to remove troublesome surfactant solubilisers, and currently made highly concentrated fire retardant, intumescent and non-slip formulations for the paint industry.

Current post: Principal Scientist of QXE Ltd industries.

Career Details

Over 22 years experience in a home and personal care international company in science and technology of detergents and fabric conditioners, rheology and processing of complex liquids, stability and shelf life of colloidal liquids, emulsions and dispersions, formulation of fabric conditioners, perfume interactions in detergents and fabric conditioners, crystallization issues in detergents, measurement techniques, and formulating innovative product concepts.

Over 10 years as a consultant for a multi-national company on production problems of melts and fillers. Consultant to a crude oil chemical company designing new solvents for absorption of natural gases. Three years lecturing post in the Institute of Nuclear Energy of Iran, Tehran.
